The M12 Light Reconnaissance Vehicle (M12 LRV), commonly referred to as the Chaingun Warthog, Warthog or 'Hog, is a variant of the M12 Force Application Vehicle and the UNSC's most prolific anti-infantry vehicle that it features a mounted M41 Light Anti-Aircraft Gun.

Overview and Background

The M12 Warthog is a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle and is the UNSC's primary ground vehicle, used for its scouting and reconnaissance capacity, or as an integral part of a mechanized infantry unit; the Warthog has been a part of the UNSC's armored vehicle fleet for two centuries, and is the most recognizable vehicle in their arsenal.

The Warthog is a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle capable of going over any obstacle without difficulty. It's a highly maneuverable vehicle, capable of making sharp turns and reaching top speeds of 125 km/h (78 MPH). It's chassis design places it into the jeep family of vehicles, featuring an open cabin with no doors or roofing and seating for three occupants; a driver, a passenger, and a gunner manning the warthog's turret mounted on the rear. Due to the increasing number of injuries sustained by marines using the Warthog in combat, engineers have installed two large holsters between the driver and passenger seats. These holsters are then fitted with two large Health Kits, each kit containing enough field dressing components to heal all three of the Warthog's occupants. These kits are permanently expended once activated and cannot be replaced until the vehicle has undergone a maintenance check, meaning that the kits are reserved until at least two of the occupants urgently require medical attention.

The LRV variant of the Warthog is equipped with an M41 Light Anti-Aircraft Gun as its main armament; a triple-barreled, electric-powered, link-less, belt-fed Chaingun mounted on the tray at the rear of the vehicle. The M41 fires 12.7x99mm armour penetrating rounds which, combined with the turret's moderate rate of fire, are capable of eliminating infantry and lightly-armoured targets/vehicles up to medium range with ease. The Chaingun's rate of fire increases the longer it is fired, and with it, the recoil and spread also increase. The near-instant travel speed of the projectiles fired means that the turret maintains its effectiveness when used on rough terrains.
