"Reactivate the weapon inside Halo and learn the truth."

Two Betrayals is the ninth mission (eighth in a straight playthrough) of the Installation 04 Campaign in Halo SPV3. After fighting hordes of Flood, John-117 manages to bring the Index to Halo's control centre. However, as soon as the Index is inserted, Cortana reveals the truth about the purpose of Installation 04. Realizing that the two refuse to activate the ring, 343 Guilty Spark orders his Sentinels to eliminate John-117.

Overview & Background[]

The level takes place in the same environment as the Assault on the Control Room; however, the whole mission is played in reverse, with players starting in the control room, the end of its sister level. Many enemy types are present, and the player has no allies. The objective of the mission is to destroy three pulse generators.

In SPV3, pacing for this mission was ignored as, before 3.2, this was the only mission featuring Covenant vs Flood combat in outdoor environments. This is also the only mission on the game to feature air combat. With the extra encounters and tasks that must be completed, along with the new areas, this mission is extremely long.

Gameplay Information[]

From the start of the mission, the Sentinels and Sentinel Enforcers, who were allies in the previous level, are now regular enemies for the rest of the Campaign. Despite this, they remain hostile towards the Flood and Covenant as well, who are also regularly encountered. Most enemy types are fought here, including the extremely rare Elite Honor Guardsman Zealot. This mission introduces Savage Covenant, who use UNSC weapons out of fear and desperation. For the first time, the player receives no assistance from friendly units since no Marines, ODST's, or Hero Units are present here.

The Sparrowhawk is available to drive in this mission for the first and only time in SPV3. Sparrowhawks appears as alternatives to the Banshees in the air combat sections. They are usually more challenging to acquire, however, often needing players to pilot the Banshees first to reach them. In a straight playthrough of the Campaign, if the first Grizzly tank in Assault on the Control Room is piloted all the way to the second canyon, where it can go no further, it will still be there in this mission, as a Cross-Map Unlock.

Developer Information[]

This is the longest mission of the game.

The Sparrowhawk was extremely challenging for the developers to get working to the standard they desired. As such, it is milked for everything its worth in this mission, since it can only be piloted here.

From its earlier iterations from 2009 onwards, the expanded area including the control room pyramid, dubbed the "cake" by the SPV3 Dev Team, had to be re-evaluated after the modders hit the A.I. limit with their original vision of the area in Assault on the Control Room. The original intention was for the environment to be symmetrical and suited for vehicle combat, but the limitations encountered meant that one side of the canyon had to be re-designed to be an on foot section, which worked out for the better, as it would suit how it would need to be traversed in this mission.

Trivia[]

  • There are 9 terminals scattered throughout the level.
  • Masterz1337 has stated that this is his favorite mission.
  • This is one of only two missions in the whole mod to feature the rare enemy, the uninfected Elite Honor Guard Zealot. Two are seen in this level, while another one is fought in Lumoria Landfall. This enemy type doesn't even appear in Firefight.
  • This is the longest level in SPV3. Most players take about 1-2 hours to finish it, especially on Legendary or Noble.
  • The only other time the Sparrowhawk is seen in SPV3 is in Firefight, but it is not drivable.
  • All Covenant forces in the first canyon area have dynamic behavior. Once the player emerges from the pulse generator room, any surviving Covenant in the area can be seen retreating down to the entrance tunnel to defend it. A battle between them and the Flood will ensue if they are still alive when the shield door is deactivated.
