The Silent Cartographer: Evolved, also referred as TSC:E, is the fifth mission (fourth in a straight playthrough, if selected) of the Installation 04 Campaign in Halo SPV3. It is a reimagining of the mission The Silent Cartographer.

Even though it started off as a side project for members of the SPV3 Dev Team, it was included in Halo: SPV3, despite it causing many problems with its integration into the mod. The level design is more mechanically demanding than any other environment in the game.

In a straight playthrough of the Campaign, the player will have the option to play either this mission or its sister level. Later on, players will be faced with the same option for the two Commander missions, that reused the two Silent Cartographer level designs.

Overview & Background[]

This level is 100% an original creation in terms of the environment. While it has the same story and objectives as its parent level, The Silent Cartographer, the entire level design has drastically changed to provide more encounters and different paths to take. Some particular areas, such as the entrance to the Cartographer facility, are not too different from the old version.

While the original Silent Cartographer appears as a grassy mountain with meadows and beaches around the whole circumference of the island, The Silent Cartographer: Evolved's landscape is much more rocky, with internal cave sections and passage ways. The level design is more complex, with many different paths intertwining, while still remaining faithful to the original levels story and non-linear concept. The iconic beach landing at the start is less open than the original, with large rocks creating more cover and alternate ways to approach the raid.

The inside areas are also much different, being arguably more grandiose in presentation and layout. While the original Cartographer room was small and tucked away in a corner of the facility, the Evolved variant is at the bottom of the ocean in a large arena like opening. The player must also activate the three power generators before the Cartographer can be accessed.

Gameplay Information[]

There are five loadouts available for the player to choose at the beginning of the level:

Loadout Armour Upgrade Grenades Primary Weapon Secondary Weapon
Grenadier Health Regen Frag Grenades (4) MA5E/GL Assault Rifle (32+320 reserve ammo and 6 grenades) M6G Pistol (8+80 reserve ammo)
Saboteur BR54HB/GL Battle Rifle (36+360 reserve ammo and 6 grenades) M7 Submachine Gun (60+600 reserve ammo)
Marksman M393 Designated Marksman Rifle (15+105 reserve ammo) MA5E Assault Rifle (32+320 reserve ammo)
Recon BR54HB Battle Rifle (36+252 reserve ammo) MA5E Assault Rifle (32+320 reserve ammo)
Demolitions M41 Rocket Launcher (2+4 reserve ammo) M91 Shotgun (8+16 reserve ammo)

Early Build/Pre-SPV3[]

Before being included in Halo SPV3, it was worked by members of CMT and the SPV3 Dev Team. Although there are no changes to the layout or scenery (with the exception of any bug fixes and Terminals), some of the tags used are different compared to the final. For example, The Brutes have the same body style but wear wearing different armor and the Master Chief model is more accurate to Halo CEA.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike original The Silent Cartographer in SPV3, TSC:E uses Marines instead of ODSTs for the initial beach raid.
  • The Master Chiefs armor Customization option in the main menu will not work in this mission. No matter which option is chosen, he will always appear in his default SPV3 armor.
    • The original build of this level was set at dawn, with a sunrise themed skybox. Later on, it was changed to midday. SPV3.3's Customization feature lets players choose between the two skyboxes.
  • The Heretic Warthog will not be deployed here if the Cross-Map Unlock was turned on in The Pillar Of Autumn, despite its appearance in the original Silent Cartographer. The Covenant vehicle drops from The Truth And Reconciliation and Phantom dropship HUD indicator from Halo will appear however.
  • The datapads, terminals and cutscenes in this level also serve as checkpoints.
  • The Commander: Evolved reuses this levels layout.
    • There are two doors around the outdoor section map with yellow lights that contain weapons and supplies. In The Commander: Evolved, these doors lead to an underground cave section only accessible in that level.
  • In this level only, some of the Grunt Majors can be seen wearing the face masks the Grunt Ultras and Grunt Spec-Ops wear. It offers them the same protection as the other Grunt ranks, meaning two headshots are necessary to kill them. This has been present throughout the missions development and it is unknown if it is a glitch or deliberate.
  • Upon returning to the surface, an Honor Guard Elite will be waiting; if the player tries to double back to lure the Elite across the hardlight bridge, this Elite doesn't fall for the trick and instead deactivates the bridge to drop the player to their doom.
