The M393 Designated Marksman Rifle, more commonly known as the DMR, is a long-range infantry firearm and a successor to the M392 DMR.

Overview & Background[]

While the introduction of the BR55 Battle Rifle did see it supersede the M392 DMR as the standard armament within the UNSC Navy, this only resulted in the latter series being retooled to suit a more niche combat role, beginning with introduction of the M393 DMR.

The M393 possesses a number of similarities to the M392; it is an air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed, semi-automatic bull-pup rifle, equipped with a smart-link, telescopic, rail-mounted scope with an integrated ammunition counter. Despite both weapons firing identical 7.62×51mm NATO ammunition from fifteen round detachable box magazines, the M393 features a longer barrel than its predecessor, allows it to fire the same rounds at a much higher velocity. This change, facilitated by the scope magnification being increased to 5x (from 3x), allows the M393 to become a powerful medium-to-long range Marksman's rifle, striking a balance between the power and long-range reach of the Sniper Rifle with the ammo capacity and medium-range versatility of the Battle Rifle.

The M393 is the most powerful standard-issue precision rifle issued to the UNSC Marine Corps, second only to the Sniper Rifle in terms of raw sniping power; the high-velocity rounds can travel extreme distances and pack a surprising punch behind them, making the DMR highly adept at damaging energy shields (something which most ballistic weapons struggle against). It is, however, not without its shortcomings; while the DMR is technically a fully automatic rifle, the high-velocity rounds produce a large amount of recoil with each shot, which adversely affects the weapon's accuracy when fired in this manner. This, combined with the high scope magnification, makes the weapon unwieldy and ill-suited for close-quarters combat.

AMPED M393[]

The AMPED M393 is a modified variant of the normal M393 Designated Marksman Rifle. Although it looks extremely alike from the normal variant (other than the color change on its scope/number counter from yellow to green), the AMPED M393 is far more powerful. Indeed, instead of the 15 bullets that is housed within the M393 Designated Marksman Rifle, the AMPED M393 could only carry 7 rounds of ammunition. The decrease in ammo carrying capacity makes this DMR even less viable in firefights than even the regular DMR.

Instead, the AMPED M393 acts as Lumoria's equivalent of the SRS99C-S2 AM Sniper Rifle. The barrel of the AMPED M393 is chambered to fire Armor-Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot rounds, similar to that of the Sniper Rifle, albeit smaller. What this means is that the AMPED M393 could take down an Elite - shield and all - in around 2-3 well-placed shots, making the DMR one of the best anti-infantry weapons in the campaign.

Gameplay Information[]

Advantages[]

General[]

  • Good at long range.
  • Moderate damage against shields.

AMPED M393[]

  • Extremely powerful against infantry, capable of taking down energy shields with a few shots.
  • High accuracy and good weapon handling allowing for precise shots.

Disadvantages[]

General[]

  • Not very reliable at close quarters, unless the player is highly skilled in aiming.
  • If fired at a fast rate, firing rounds could miss.

AMPED M393[]

  • Carry less ammo than the normal DMR, making each shot count.
  • Ammo is rare for this DMR, making it a very situational weapon.
  • Gives a strong kick when fired, forcing the user to realign the scope with the target after every shot.

Trivia[]

  • While it has 15 rounds in each magazine like the one seen in Halo: Reach, the design for the DMR is taken from Halo 4.
  • The AMPED DMR is one of only two Lumoria exclusive weapons that can be used in the Installation 04 Campaign, the other weapon being the SOCOM M6C Pistol. The only instance that this occurs is in The Truth And Reconciliation, as both weapons make up the Rebel Assassin load-out.
