The M12G1 Light Anti-Armor Vehicle (M12G1 LAAV), commonly known as the Gauss Warthog, is a variant of the UNSC M12 FAV Warthog that features a mounted M68 ALIM Gauss Cannon. It is designed to quickly defeat heavy infantry and lightly-armoured vehicles such as the Shadow and the Ghost.
Overview and Background Edit
The M12 Warthog is a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle and is the UNSC's primary ground vehicle, used for its scouting and reconnaissance capacity, or as an integral part of a mechanized infantry unit; the Warthog has been a part of the UNSC's armoured vehicle fleet for two centuries, and is the most recognizable vehicle in their arsenal.
The Warthog is a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle capable of going over any obstacle without difficulty. It's a highly maneuverable vehicle, capable of making sharp turns and reaching top speeds of 125 km/h (78 MPH). It's chassis design places it into the jeep family of vehicles, featuring an open cabin with no doors or roofing and seating for three occupants: a driver, a passenger, and a gunner manning the Warthog's turret mounted on the rear. Due to the increasing number of injuries sustained by marines using the Warthog in combat, engineers have installed two large holsters between the driver and passenger seats. These holsters are then fitted with two large health kits, each kit containing enough field dressing components to heal all three of the Warthog's occupants. These kits are permanently expended once activated and cannot be replaced until the vehicle has undergone a maintenance check, meaning that they are reserved until at least two of the occupants urgently require medical attention.
The G1 variant of the Warthog is equipped with an M68 Asynchronous Linear-Induction Motor Gauss Cannon as its main armament; a small-scale Magnetic Accelerator Cannon mounted on the tray at the rear of the vehicle. The M68 launches 25x130mm slugs at an extremely high velocity, generating immense kinetic energy when fired and giving each shot exceptional armour penetration ability. This means that the Gauss Cannon is primarily deployed as an anti-vehicle weapon, as the high-damage and high-speed projectiles can destroy fast-moving, lightly armoured vehicles in as little as two shots. While this extreme firepower can also kill most types of infantry units instantly, the recharge delay between shots and the inability to eliminate more than one target per shot makes it ineffective against large groups of infantry.
