I never thought I'd see the things I have. The first time I saw clear stars in a vacuum. The first time my daughter cried. The first time I saw a planet burned to cinders and glass under Covenant bombardment. At least we didn't have to watch that happen to Reach. Catherine was down there, with all her Spartans... too stubborn to run.
And now here we are, in an unknown space, staring at another first. At this... ring. When we fled Reach, I obeyed Cole Protocol and ordered Cortana to plot a random course through slipspace, to ensure that no Covenant ships followed us to any UNSC population centers. I have a feeling Cortana isn't telling me everything. The chances that we found this ring through a random slipspace jump are astronomically low. But she's the only hope we have of surviving, let alone making it home. So for now I'll just have to trust her judgement, and if not hers, then at least the Chief's.

I don't know how much more time we can possibly have. Not just me and my command, but all of humanity. We just witnessed nearly a billion people die as the Covenant destroyed our fleet and the planet Reach. The world is nothing but a burning cinder now, no different than all the others we've lost in this long war. This was different though for me. I've lost people under my command before, but these were people we knew. It was my second home. Our escape was a miracle in itself. I thought it was all over when a Covenant warship ambushed us as we left the dry dock. We are only here thanks to the sacrifices of the Spartans of the Noble Team.
I regret having to leave Noble Six behind, but as the Covenant fleet started to close in, my orders were clear. Getting the package to safety was my priority, and any risk to that mission would be a disservice to the price those Spartans paid along the way. I feel responsible, not just because Noble Team died delivering the Cortana fragment to us, but because in a way, I am responsible for their creation. Catherine and I both.

How is this possible?! These beasts and their ship, so primitive, so weak, so filthy and vile, have led us to that which we sought for eons! We have found Halo at last! But how did they lead us here? Do they know something we do not? I saw the Commander's mandibles curl as we exited slipspace after following the human ship. It is he who will be credited for taking us to this holy relic, but even he knows that, bizarrely, it is the vermin who are responsible for this discovery.
This is why these savages must be extinguished. They do not know what they have found. They have no respect for the gods. Left unchecked, they would destroy this relic with their ignorance and stop us from completing the Great Journey. Perhaps it is a test that they led us here - a final gauntlet to prove our worth.

It is one thing to be stuck in this cramped, smelly human ship. It is another thing to be ordered to fight alongside these Jiralhanae. They have no honor, and their combat tactics are simplistic, though brutally effective. Not unlike the humans, they rush headfirst into battle with their antique weapons and primitive explosives. The Commander seems to be indifferent to them. He says we are all on the path to the Great Journey and salvation foretold by the Heirarchs.
But despite his words, I can tell these beasts make him uneasy. It is the Heirarch's command that they be given a more prominent role in combat, an unheard-of order that could tear our Covenant asunder should they intrude on our role as leaders of war. Yet they say it is a religious matter, and that all must be allowed to partake in the glory of combat and sacrifice in order to be worthy of the Great Journey. But what should I care? The more that enter combat and die, the better for us. I, for one, am content to let these creatures and the humans destroy each other, as long as it is we the Sangheili who seize the glory which is rightfully ours.

I wonder what the Chief thinks of who he is. Not the Master Chief as he is now, but rather the boy I knew as John. That was his name. I wonder sometimes: if I had known what would become of those children, would I still have helped? Would I have stayed silent, or warned them to run?
I've heard some describe Catherine as a monster for what she did to those children. But she loved them all. She cared. She did it for what was, at the time, the greater good, and now in the end her ugly gamble may be all that stands between us and extinction. Whoever that boy would have become, he's now, for all purposes, dead. He's the Master Chief now, and he may be the sole person who can save us all.
But all of those other children, the Spartans we had to leave behind as they were burned alive when the Covenant glassed the planet... forget what I'm feeling. I don't know how the Chief can keep it together. They're all gone. The only family he's ever had. Worst of all, he sent them down there. They died following his orders. I have faced the same reality countless times, but when I lead my ship into combat and certain death, I expect to die too. I hope I never have to feel the guilt of leading people to their death while I survive. But I do feel guilty... because I also followed orders, and because of that, someone I love is now dead. I let Catherine stay down there. I let her stay.

There is something unusual about this Covenant fleet. I've never seen their ships exercise such restraint and caution I have no doubt they, too, are surprised to find this ring, but they seem to be unusually hesitant in their actions against us.
Despite several Covenant warships in proximity to the Pillar of Autumn, we've not detected any sign of imminent attack. Several of them are drifting towards us at low speeds, while others seem to be moving towards the ring. While there have been ONI reports of Covenant forces attempting to capture our ships, none have been successful. Of course, that is due to strict adherence to the Cole Protocol, which was designed to prevent precisely that outcome.
Given their approach vectors, I can only assume they intend to disable us at close range and board. Perhaps they fear damage to the ring in warship engagement. If so, we can use that to our advantage - if we can survive these boarders. Given the Master Chief's reputation in combat, I think we stand a fair chance.

While unworthy to stand in the presence of the holy relics and wholly repulsive in the sight of the gods, there is still something admirable about the humans. They fled like cowards after we destroyed their planet. They are outnumbered and outgunned. We control their ship and we have slaughtered all those who have opposed us. Yet they still fight, and their vessel engages in combat with our fleet despite the inevitability of its destruction. We Covenant would embrace our deaths and revel in our martyrdom, but they continue to resist.
They are courageous and clever creatures, no doubt, but woefully misguided. We have encountered many humans throughout the ship demonstrate clever tactics and treacherous traps. But there is only one human to truly challenge us here: their green Demon. He has cut through our boarding parties, killing even our most seasoned warriors, all while protecting his fellow vermin. If there is one human who is a worthy foe of we Sangheili, it is him.

It is a great honor to have been named Ossoona by the Heirarchs. It is not the first time I have been bestowed this rank, as I was granted it first to infiltrate the communications complex on their military stronghold world. It was there that I first personally observed the humans' Demons. The rest of my brothers fell that day to them, but as Ossoona it is my goal to gather intelligence, robbing me of such a glorious death.
In addition to recording the interior of their ship and acquiring their construct in hopes of extracting valuable intelligence, I have also been ordered to capture their leaders. We must know how they found this Holy Relic--surely it is not by accident. The location of their home world is all but irrelevant now. We will find it like we found their stronghold world, and when we do, we will leave it a molten sphere of glass.
Then and only then, with all impurities swept from the path, shall we begin the Journey.

I have encountered one of the Demons. Unlike those I witnessed at the communications relay on their stronghold world, this one was clad in green armor. He is an impressive warrior. He seemed to appear from nowhere, snapping the neck of one Jiralhanae and using its Shredder to slay the rest of the beasts before their dull minds could even react. The Demon shows no distaste at seizing our weapons, even the primitive castoffs used by the Brutes.
Oh, how I would have loved to plunge my sword through him as he looted their bodies for supplies. But, alas, my mission is my highest honor, and while I could step from these shadows and slay the Demon, the information I have gathered is far too important to hazard in combat. I must make it to their bridge, for it is where the commanders and their AI construct can be seized.
This Demon will perish, just like the ones we slew on their stronghold world. These creatures are not invincible.

I only recently learned of what became of the children I observed with Catherine so many years ago. I'd heard rumors over the years about the elite soldiers we now know as Spartans, and their seemingly inhuman abilities. At first they were just stories of suspicious incidents. Kids stealing Pelicans, recovery teams sent to far off worlds I had once visited, dots people couldn't connect into a single shape. But once I heard the story about a young boy who killed several ODSTs in unarmed combat, I knew for sure what I had been part of. The Spartans. Now all dead. Save one.
It's hard to believe he was the small, freckled kid I met nearly 30 years ago. When all the available Spartans were brought to Reach to be briefed on RED FLAG, I could see similarities to the kids Catherine and I once tested. I didn't recognize the ones who saved us on Reach, but whoever they were, they were Spartans nonetheless. Catherine looked at all of them like they were her own children. Yet she could not raise Miranda with me. Her own real flesh and blood.

At long last, I have found the bridge and infiltrated it. The conversation I overheard confirms my suspicions. The humans were not aware that their jump would lead to Halo. Their captain, whom they refer to as "Keezz," is clearly an experienced tactician. I have reason to believe he is responsible for the ignoble defeat we suffered on the human world of Sigma Octanus, where we thought a sacred artifact might lead us to the rings. They are purging their database and making preparations to land the ship on Halo. They plan to travel to their escape pods. Extraction of Keezz will be problematic at best. If I follow them to the lifepods, I certainly risk detection. However, there is no way to know exactly when this ship will crash onto Halo, and if anyone is left onboard they will most certainly die on impact. I am dropping my recorded log and transceiver for my brethren to find, while I accompany Keezz off the ship and onto the ring. It is imperative our brothers find their escape craft before Keezz can regroup with the rest of his ilk. I will make contact again at a later time, as I monitor Keezz's movements.

Catherine was the only woman who brought me any happiness in this long war. She gave me the most precious thing of all: my daughter, Miranda. Catherine had never considered being a mother, and to be honest with myself, I had never considered being a father. But when I saw Miranda for the first time, I fell in love with that beautiful baby girl. It's good I did. Catherine and I had our duties, and as brilliant as she may be, being a mother, being a lover, wasn't something she was interested in. Or perhaps she just wasn't capable of it. Ironic, considering everything else her brilliant mind is capable of doing.
I was able to contact her during the Battle of Reach. I tried to save her, but she said what she was doing was more valuable than her own life. She told me that the important thing was to retrieve Cortana's AI fragment from Noble Team, and to get it away from Reach. I watched as every ship in the fleet was gutted or melted into slag as the Covenant fleet overwhelmed them. I watched the Covenant swarm the planet and start to burn the cities. The Chief's Spartans are dead, Catherine is dead, and I'll be lucky if I'm still alive when this day is over.
Of all of us, Miranda might be the only one left.
That is all I can hope for.

It's another magnificent day in the glorious life of the UNSC Marines. We hit the ground fast and hard and came up shooting. Those Covenant bastards didn't even give us a chance to bury our dead or throw the Lucky Charms out of our MREs. Wherever the hell we are, at least it looks nice. After all the shit we been through, it's nice to put a foot on solid ground while kicking Covenant ass. I landed with the Chief, and a short hike uphill led us to a massive tower where we found the rest of Charlie Company already in defensive positions. We can hole up here for quite some time, at least until the Pelicans can pick us up. And if we can't... well, there's going to be Covenant bodies piled high before my lovely mug hits the ground.

Most curious. Several ships have arrived in orbit, many seemingly damaged, all armed for battle. And it would seem they were in one not too long ago. Preliminary scans show damage from primitive ballistic weaponry, somewhat surprising given their own energy weapons. Perhaps their enemies were a less developed species?
Most uncouth.
Oh, I do hope these visitors show restraint. This ring serves many functions, and a belligerent visitor could lead to most catastrophic consequences. Curiously, their technology is similar to that of my creators. Is it possible some survived the firing of the Halo Array so many years ago, and have now returned? No... their technology seems too simplistic, and they do not behave as my creators ever would. I will wait to see what these visitors do.

Reclaimers! In orbit! Perhaps the ships that arrived before were a scouting party? Have my makers' children inherited the mantle and led others here? But what for? I have attempted to establish communication with the Reclaimers, but with no success. This ship also seems to have suffered heavy damage in fighting. Perhaps these ships were all part of a battle and need help? Yet the Reclaimer vessel seems to be unrelated to those of the others. Intercepted communications are in completely separate languages, with no discernible similarities in the dialects. I do hope that they are not here due to a Flood outbreak. My makers sacrificed everything to prevent their spread. It would be a shame if we had to reactivate the rings due to negligence of containment protocols at another facility, or, worse, a re-emergence of the Flood from beyond this Galaxy. If need be, I will not hesitate to activate the Array.

The Reclaimers' ship is now on a trajectory for impact in sector 45 of this ring. I am concerned the kinetic impact could damage the substructure of the ring, as well as knock local systems offline. I do not believe it will impact with enough speed to seriously damage the integrity of the ring, but it will penetrate layers not meant for habitation. If enough sub systems are damaged, it could have an effect on the integrity of the Array. A failure in the simulated gravity could require me to open a portal to the Ark for immediate repairs. A number of the aggressors' ships are also approaching the ring, but seem to be proceeding cautiously.
How can it be the Reclaimers behave with such recklessness and urgency, while these scavengers display an appropriate respect for this installation's purpose?

We Marines may kick ass on the ground, but if there's one person I'd trust to beat those hinge-heads in space, it'd be Captain Keyes. We'd all seen the footage of the crazy fool loop he pulled at Sigma Octanus IV. Hell, some call it the most brilliant maneuver in modern space combat. I call it lucky, which is a damn sight better than good. But he's good too; I got to see him fight at Reach, where he pulled off another goddamn miracle. He charged one of the largest and most advanced ships the UNSC had ever seen, and took it out with nothing but a tactical nuke and a good poker face. The Autumn may not look like much, but with all her secret upgrades and Captain Keyes behind the proverbial wheel, well, she's sure as hell the reason I'm standing here. We've got a good team here, between Chief and Keyes, and some of the toughest son of a bitch Marines I've ever had the honor to fight alongside. We'll be just fine. It has been too long since our pack has had the opportunity to hunt. The Sangheili ships are cramped, and despite their so-called honor, they eat as if they were Grunts fresh off the teat. When we had our own ships, we had plenty of meat to rip apart and feasts were plentiful. So when we were ordered to hunt the humans down, we did so with fervor. Finally, fresh meat for our bellies! Not the most tender, bonier than we prefer, but certainly a real meal. You can tell they are a weak species by their taste: they lack the pungency of predator meat, and their fat is sweet like cattle. We have rounded up several survivors from the human ship and imprisoned them within the ruins left by the Gods. We didn't bother to restrain the wounded; just hung them up to bleed. We stored their primitive gear. It's well suited to tenderizing their flesh. There is no need to dirty our own gear beating their lifeless corpses. Today is a good day for the pack indeed. I do miss the days when we had our own ships, when we could do as we please free from the watchful eyes of the Sangheili. They talk of how grateful we should be to finally serve on their ships, but their disdain for us is never hidden.
Prideful fools.
Tartarus tells us to be patient, that this is the next step. The holy Prophet of Truth commanded the Sangheili to integrate our race into their ships and fleet, and we must hold our tongues while we observe and learn. We have been given a chance to obey the Prophets, and by obedience, earn our path to Salvation when the Great Journey begins. The Sangheili treat us as if we were the Unggoy, sending us to the front lines in hopes that we perish, but we continue to succeed in spite of their suicidal missions. Sometimes we play dumb just to watch them grow agitated as they continue to underestimate our intelligence. The Sangheili are prideful and arrogant, and this war has gone on long enough that their power has grown far
beyond their place.
Some believe other members of the Covenant deem them more worthy of loyalty than the Hierarchs, a heresy we can not allow to grow to fruition. We Jiralhanae are devout in our belief, and have no delusions of our own self importance. We live to serve the Hierarchs and to transcend as the Forerunners did long ago.
The Hierarchs know this, and I suspect the reason we are forced to live among the Sangheili is so we may strike when the time comes. Until then, we observe and learn. Their battle tactics, their strengths, their flaws. When the time comes we will tear them from their harnesses, throw them from their ships, and take their place as the hand of the Hierarchs!

We Marines are the best humanity has to offer. But I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the Chief. I was on Station Gamma over Reach when the Covenant attacked, and I ordered my squad to get into vacuum gear at the first alarm. When the atmosphere vented, we were all that was left. All those other poor suckers lying there looking startled that they couldn't find anything to breathe.
Shit.
We tried to make our way to the nav center, but the Covenant boarded in force and pinned us down. I thought we were done. We were going to die and our sorry asses would fail our mission. When the Covenant reached the nav database, it'd be game over for the human race. But then, out of the dark, I saw the Chief and this other Spartan with a sniper rifle. Those two cleaned up our attackers and completely destroyed the nav database for us like it was nothing. Two biggest badasses I ever saw. The attackers do not seem to be intent on destroying the Reclaimers' ship, but they are certainly trying to disable it. Perhaps they are trying to prevent it from reaching the Installation? But why? Could they be trying to stop them from responding to a new Flood incursion? I have considered aiding with the Reclaimers, but I cannot risk my installation in a battle against the aggressors' ships. It turns out we weren't the only ones who got lucky crashing here. Plenty of other Marines in the valley. After Foehammer picked us up, she spotted a huge structure built into the side of the mountain. Perfect place to regroup and setup a firebase. Those Covenant bastards had the same idea, but lucky for us, those dumb bugs were so hell bent on hunting us down they didn't think we'd regroup and attack in force. Airmobile infantry, you squid-headed sons of bitches! Only downside is they didn't bring in any of those fancy portable recharging stations. With those generators and all the Covenant weapons we captured, we'd be able to put up one hell of a defense. But this is a good place. Speaking of doors, it's even got an interior space where we can triage our wounded. But we haven't been able to find a way to unlock it yet. The Reclaimers have launched several escape craft towards the ring. Their ship seems to be disabled, and the aggressors are closing in on it. I do hope they don't get too close to the ring. Prolonged battle could lead to irrepairable damage. Nevertheless, I must prepare to deal with our new visitors, should they try to approach restricted areas. I am concerned about the research station within the nearby gas giant. There are old facilities there, and I do not know if they were ever decommissioned before my makers activated the ring. The most troubling of them is a research station for the Flood. Any outbreak there could easily spread, especially since there is no way for me to monitor the activity there, without traveling there myself.

The Reclaimers have finally landed, I have observed several, and they are quite lacking in technology, they most certainly have yet to fully recover from their devolution the Didact set upon as punishment for their crimes in the past war. The aggressors have also revealed themselves, and are composed of various races and species. There have been several skirmishes between the Reclaimers and the aggressors, with the Reclaimers often quite regrettably being overwhelmed and killed. The aggressors are using energy based weaponry, much cruder than that of my creators while the Reclaimers are using primitive chemical propulsion based weaponry. The aggressors also seem to have my creators' symbols inscribed on much of their equipment. For what reason I am not yet sure, but if they are familiar with my creators they could be potential allies, although their interaction with the Reclaimers seems to indicate otherwise. There is one exception to the Reclaimers being slaughtered, one who wears a green combat skin and seems to be the only human equipped with some form of energy shielding. This reclaimer is most effective in combat. If there is an outbreak, he may be a suitable candidate for retrieval of the index.

I shouldn't have written that down. Boy are these hinge-heads pissed. They came at us with everything. Phantoms carrying all sorts of equipment and every sort of freak I'd seen since the start of this war. We sent some Warthogs out to disrupt the Grunts before they reached our doors, but a whole column of Wraiths rolled in through a cave up at the top of the opposite cliffs. Believe it or not, but light recogniassance vehicles don't trade well with alien tanks. We've got men out there who won't last long, and we don't have the ordnance to take out that armor.
Meanwhile they're trying to land at the top of our base to flank us, and if they bring in those feathered Skirmishers they had at Reach, well, it's game over. Those things will leap right over our walls. With more time to prepare, We'd have this place locked down tight. But we're scattered and the Covenant have half a dozen ships in orbit. I've already lost count of how many times the Chief has pulled us straight out of the shit today. Right when I figured we were SOL and about to break, he came speeding out of the cave behind those wraiths. Hit 'em in the ass with some heavy firepower. We didn't even know what was happening until we saw the Wraiths exploding. When the Covenant turned to meet the threat we had a chance to regroup and get back in the fight, taking cover behind destroyed Warthogs and sniping infantry while they were in disarray.
I'd heard terrible stories about these Spartans from some ODSTs on board the Autumn, but god damn if I haven't met a bigger badass. This Elite wants to know about the Chief. Where he is, why he's so strong compared to our other soldiers, where he comes from... I laughed when they called the Chief 'demon'. Felt good. Then he told me about all the demons they'd killed on Reach. They tortured me for hours, and then they gave me to the Brutes, but they still aren't getting anything out of me. I tried to provoke a one of them into killing me, but just before he could, he was interrupted - maybe orders from the gold-armored ones in charge? I guess they really want us alive.
I'm afraid I'll have to find a way to kill myself on my own if these torture sessions keep going. I don't know how long I can hold out, or what they are willing to do to get information from us. There are no records of humans being captured by the Covenant. If they have, no one has escaped to make a report. One of the ONI spooks would know for sure.
If I somehow escape, I'm sure they'll want to hear about it. But the Chief and Cortana are out there, and given their original mission before we returned to Reach... well, I won't be surprised if they come busting in here.

I've begun our interrogation of the humans we have captured, including their captain. From what we've learned from Isna 'Nosolee's mission log, it seems this "Captain Keezz" is not to be trifled with. It was he who put the final bullet in 'Nosolee's head.
These humans are essential to learning about their Demon, if I am able to hunt him down and regain my honor. The rest of my brothers look upon me with disdain, not just for failing to complete my mission, but for failing to die trying. But I will redeem myself. The rest of my brothers are more concerned with discovering how the Humans found Halo. No one believes it's by accident. If the humans know something we do not, I will find out.

The Elite torturing me is named 'Zamamee. I got to see his superiors, both high ranking Elites. One sounds like he's called "Soha 'Rolamee" and the other "Bako 'Ikaporamee." I guess for jaws get you names like that. I think they forbade 'Zamamee from gathering any more information about the Chief. My translator is picking up words like "hunt" and "demon" any time they engage in conversation. 'Zamamee seems to want to hunt him down because he sees him as a great threat. But 'Rolamee and 'Ikaporamee disagree. They think the Chief is just like any other of our soldiers, and that he can be eradicated without much effort.
What they want is information about Earth, our fleet, the Pillar of Autumn and, more importantly, how we found this ring which they call Halo. I resisted their interrogations and torture sessions, and gave them some version of the truth in order to learn more. They didn't believe me when I told them we found it by luck. They think we know more about Forerunner technology than I am letting on. Which may be true. Cortana must have entered the slipspace co-ordinates that brought us to Halo for a reason. I think she's going to find these Elites before they find her.

I have begun my interrogation of Keezz. He is an older male, with steely eyes and a measure of resolve impressive for a human. After torture proved useless, I tried a different tactic.
I appealed to his curiosity. He will never escape our ship, so it matters not what he learns. What is important is that we learn what he knows. Most of us want to know the location of their other worlds and home planet, and we are all eager to find out how they came to find Halo. But those are of little interest to me. I want to know who their Demon is, and what makes him so special. My commanders have told me not to bother, but I will find out. We talked in front of Keezz, hoping that if he heard us reveal information then he would be more inquisitive and drop information of his own. If what we learned from him is to be believed, the humans did find the holy ring by accident. It will be a relief if this is indeed the truth. By and large the humans seem to know little about this ring. They have yet to visit any site of importance, and their focus seems to be mere survival. I will continue my interrogation and report when I know more.

The humans continue to resist, but we are making progress. One has finally submitted to our persuasions and yielded information I sorely needed. The humans indeed believe they happened upon this world by accident, but they admit there is only one of their number that knows for sure. That would be the human's own thinking machine, whom they have named Cortana. This machine plotted the jump to this system, and, by extension, Halo. The intelligence resides inside their Demon, whom they refer to as "The Master Chief." The others will soon have no choice but to let me hunt down the Demon. His death and the acquisition of his machine will lead to the answers we seek. When we come to possess this Cortana, we will finally be able to gather the locations of the human homeworld and all their colonies. No longer will we have to search the galaxy for more of the vermin to exterminate. If only we had captured one of these human-associated intelligences intact, the war could have been finished many cycles ago. But so it is. Now my hunt for this demon will bring victory and salvation to the entire Covenant. My honor will be restored and my place on the Journey guaranteed.

It seems there is an individual on this ship named "The Prophet of Stewardship." So I guess Catherine was right. There is a species of the Covenant we have yet to encounter. And if he is here, then perhaps Chief's original mission is still viable...
When I hear the Covenant talking about the Prophet, it is with a certain respect and obedience they do not extend to each other. There's definitely something else going on, and we must find it out, preferably before the Covenant do. This "Halo" might be a weapon, a holy sanctuary, or both. It might even be central to the Covenant's religion, which would confirm my suspicions about their uncharacteristic behavior.
We need to get out of here and join up with the other survivors. What happens on this ring could determine the fate of the galaxy.

Covenant bastards! Why are they keeping us alive? There must be something important they want to know. They won't let us sleep and they feed us shit I'm sure even their Grunts wouldn't eat. If it was only about being tired and eating crap I'd be fine- the UNSC trains us for that. But they're torturing and killing us in the most barbaric ways. The Brutes and Elites come in and take us, sometimes for hours at a time. They just go around in the cells and pick one of us seemingly at random.
Their methods are horrible. First they use some of their drugs to keep us awake- to enhance the pain- and then the fun begins. Plasma burns, crushed bones, scarifications. We're nothing more than animals to them. If they don't kill us, they'll drive us mad. It won't be long before there aren't any of us left.

At last, we have found Halo! Thousands of years searching for clues and following false leads, and here the holy ring shines before my eyes! As the Prophet of Stewardship,my[sic] sole purpose is to recover artifacts, regardless of the sacrifices requires of the crew. Artifacts will bring about the Journey, and the Journey brings salvation for all! Yet it is troubling that we have found this ring by human hands. Many think the humans may know something we do not, that perhaps they understood the Forerunners differently than us. Blasphemy! The Gods are rewarding us for burning the human military base and their armored demons. It is the Gods who led the humans to find this ring through their "random" slipspace jump, knowing we would follow and find our reward.
This is our final test, our final challenge before the Great Journey begins! The Heirarchs will be extremely pleased with this discovery. Halo's power will allow us all to fulfill the dream which our Covenant was founded upon.

I have dispatched my own Honor Guard to the sacred sites on this ring, so that I might travel there as soon as they are secured. Our dropships are already setting down upon the Silent Cartographer, where devotion and prayer will bless us with the position of every facility upon this ring. From there, we can terminate any threats this ring may pose to us, human or otherwise. But more importantly, we can use it to locate to Sacred Icon required to activate Halo, and the Control Room that will be its receptacle.
Much to the disappointment of the Jiralhanae, my honor guards are the only ones allowed into these holy sites. The Sangheili's position in the Covenant requires it, lest we risk further political turmoil. But I dream of placing the pliant, loyal, undemanding Jiralhanae in their position... with the technology of the Honor Guard retrofitted to their power armor, they would certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

We were all knocked unconscious or killed when our life pod landed. When the survivors woke up, there were Covenant search crews in Phantoms closing in on us. We tried to radio for help- at least we learned that a good portion of the crew made it to safety. Even managed to establish a base! But then the Phantoms started to touch down all around us. The few of us with weapons went out and never came back. The rest of us prepared to take them on in hand to hand combat. That obviously didn't go well. Surprisingly, they took us prisoners instead of ripping us apart... Those of us who tried to escape were chased down and recaptured, though one of the gold-armored elites cut Private Barnes' arm off as a warning to the rest of us. If we escape maybe he'll get one of those cool robot ones.
These Covies have something planned for us. Everyone says this kind of behavior from them is unprecedented. That wigs me out. The precedents were bad enough.

We have faced threats upon the God's relics before. While we rise to the challenge of the Sentinel drones that test our valor, the blasphemy I fear we may find today is the Flood. Our Covenant has encountered the parasite on several occasions, most recently upon the shield world discovered by the Prophet of Regret. Every encounter we have had with them has verged upon catastrophe. Our tradition of glassing the human worlds comes from a protocol we developed to ensure that Flood-infested worlds can never spread across the stars.
The Flood nearly defeated the gods, but they will not defeat us. The Forerunners' Great Journey was their final victory over the Flood as they ascended into paradise. When the rings activate once again, those worthy, those who have accepted our Covenant, will ascend to that higher plane, while the unworthy shall be left behind. This is the Covenant's age-old promise, and it shall be fulfilled!

A bunch of us tried to escape again. They had Jackals escorting us. Those wobbly birds made the mistake of leading us too close to their stockpile of captured weapons- I think the Jackals keep them as contraband. Physically, a human is no match for one of those things, but two humans are. And while they were distracted, the rest of us grabbed our weapons off the rack. You'd think they'd secure our weapons, but I think they hold us in too much contempt.
We fought our way through the hangar bay, meeting little resistance. We eventually had to split up. Brutes pursued us through the ship and there was no way we were going to take them all on in close quarters. I think we lost them, but who knows for how long. I just know if we can't escape, we'll hole up and kill as many of these bastards as we can. That's as good a death as any.

This whole mission was a mistake. That's what happens when you have some ONI spook hanging on to your Pelican who cares more about gathering so-called intelligence than staying alive. He said the Covenant found something they considered important, and so obviously it's in mankind's best interest to follow them to this island. Everything is fine for that shithead. He's not the one who fought his way off Reach, defended a cruiser from an onslaught of aliens, and then spent every waking moment on this ring fighting to save his sorry ass. I guess we're calling it Halo now.
Of course, the egghead knew this island was important to the Covenant because they deployed a whole legion of troops to defend it. Hunters and Brutes, as if the Elites weren't bad enough on their own. No shit it's important with a garrison like that; I could've done that analysis myself. I don't know why we're here, but I do know we're about to take casualties.
Shit man. Out of the frying pan and into the grease fire.

As a youngling on Sanghelios, fighting in the dust and training to be a warrior worthy of my clan, I was told legends of the Forerunners. Of their great cities, temples and Guardians, and of the ultimate gift from the gods, relics so holy they were mentioned only in whisper... Halos.
My youthful imagination flamed with the stories told by elders, and I vowed myself to one day walk upon these sacred worlds and be among the first to reach salvation. I rose quickly in the ranks through the strength of my faith and skill in war, quelling heresy on many worlds. The crusade against the humans began shortly after. My valor in battle against the suicidal human hordes produced a promotion to Junior Fieldmaster in the Fleet of Grand Benediction, granting me the opportunity I had once dreamt of.

A Brute pack found us. I had my first encounter with them in New Alexandria back on Reach, and they are scary as shit, but at least they're easier to kill than Elites. The problem is there's never just one. They run in packs like Helljumpers on leave. Some of them recently started wearing power armor too, and it can soak up more fire than a low-ranking Elite... but at least when you break it it's gone for good.
I'd almost prefer them to Elites, if it weren't for the fact I've seen them rip my friends to pieces with their bare hands. Not that they need to grapple with you - one of them knocked Cruz eight meters with a single blow. Shattered his rib cage, drove bone fragments through everything in his chest cavity. We gave him enough painkiller to make it easy on him. Never mind those big-ass grenade launchers the Brutes carry: a direct hit and you're red mist. And, hey, if you survive being blown to pieces, they have a four-foot scythe attached to their weapons to carve you into trophies! They'll wear your skull on their shoulder after they kill you, man.

I confess to considerable curiosity about these aggressors, who multiple transmissions refer to as "The Covenant". They use delightfully dramatic--though grossly inaccurate--verbiage in reference to this Installation and its facilities, talking as if they were primitive pilgrims visiting a sacred shrine. Their deference and reverence in approaching my Installation is rather gratifying, and appears to be the reasoning behind their hesitation to immediately destroy the human vessel.
Why these interlopers would attempt to access command-level areas after their earlier caution is most mystifying! I realize now how severely careless I have been in maintaining security protocols. I have no higher-powered Sentinel forces, and the ones currently active will only be a minor stopgap to block access. After all these years, I have only prepared them for an outbreak of the Flood, not to defend against a higher-tiered species. These interlopers have already accessed the Installation's Cartographer, and I anticipate they will access the control center and breach containment facilities soon. What is their motivation? I must scan their local communications and attempt to make contact with one of their ancilla. Perhaps I can force it to divulge the reasons for their invasion, as well as their hostility towards the Reclaimers. I must take action quickly to avoid further damage to my Installation. Time is of the essence!

Man oh man, we're screwed. We have no choice but to retreat into one of the alien structures on the island, and we ran into this badass Elite - as if the normal kind aren't bad enough, this one had weird orange ornamental armor. At least we thought it was ornamental. We came around the corner and found him waiting for us with an energy sword. No big deal, right? There's a reason ODSTs move in squads. We've taken them down easy before, even the gold ones.
But the minute we opened fire, we started shitting ourselves. Bullets bounced off it like it was wearing a full-body Jackal gauntlet. It leapt right into the middle of us and started hacking away. It had me pinned, about to slice me in two, before Haverson lit it up with a captured plasma rifle. Its shields went down and I don't know how I shot it in the face because all I could see was the energy sword about ten centimeters from my nose. If anyone finds more of these things, don't even bother firing at it with ballistic weaponry. You'll be lucky to survive.

I had hoped my Installation's Cartographer would avoid detection, but it appears the invaders have previous experience in exploring Forerunner sites. They have completely occupied the facility with various forces including- oh, my! Combat gestalts! I have never seen this configuration before... most odd. I do hope they don't make contact with the ring's experimental reserve. I can only speculate what kind of effect that might have on the creatures.
At any rate, the interloping hostiles have decrypted the Cartographer's mapping systems quite efficiently, and have deployed forces to key locations, including containment facilities, Control Room, and Library. I do hope they have the sense to obey protocol and avoid breaching quarantine zones. What I do not understand is why they attempt to occupy the location of the Index, the Control Room, and Flood containment facilities. Perhaps they are simply trying to enact safety protocols for a larger Flood outbreak that has once again engulfed the Galaxy? If there is an outbreak once again that requires the activation of the Array, why would the humans not help? Surely they know what is at stake!

Seven cycles after the commencement of war against the human infidels, I was offered the chance to serve as Honor Guard to the mighty Heirarchs, the Prophet of Regret. I could not conceive any higher honor...
Attending a Hierarch was also a straight path to the worlds of the gods. I served the Prophet well for many cycles, at his side during the early human campaigns. I was with him when at long last, an Arbiter led us to a holy site--a Forerunner shield world housing entire fleets of sacred vessels.

The world the Prophet's forces uncovered housed immeasurable power, bequeathed by the Forerunners to their Reclaimers, we, the Covenant. It should have meant the swift end of the war.
But a lone human ship interfered. Due to the risk posed by the humans, the Prophet was compelled to depart the planet, so I accompanied him to safety. I do not know what became of the Arbiter and that world, only that none of the Prophet's remaining troops returned to us. There were Demons there. Those accursed beasts tore through many brave faithful that day in a desperate attempt to halt the Great Journey.

The unthinkable has happened! The Reclaimer has purposefully deactivated Halo's security systems, including those in the containment areas! Oh, this is very very bad. With these warring species on my ring, there are plenty of bodies and equipment for the Flood to put to use. I do not believe the Reclaimer is aware of what he released. He has saved many of his fellow humans in battle, but upon the deactivation of the security systems he unleashed the Flood on his own people, including the captain of their vessel. The creatures calling themselves the Covenant were highly selective in which areas they chose to access. Perhaps I was wrong to worry about their encroachment on the containment facilities. It would seem they set out to guard these areas, as if they were familiar with the Flood. The Reclaimer's actions, meanwhile, continue to display profound ignorance of the function of this ring. I may very well have to reach out to this Reclaimer if we are unable to contain this outbreak, as the activation of the array will once again be necessary. In the meantime, I must assess the severity of this outbreak. Perhaps these Covenant forces in the vicinity of the containment facility can be of some help.

The Covenant activity here has been highly unusual. We have very little insight into Covenant behavior when they're not trying to kill us, but this site is clearly of paramount value. We've begun to suspect that there is a species within the Covenant known as "Prophets," and apparently one of them is supposed to arrive to this location they call "The Silent Cartographer." The only reason I know this is because I was briefed to guide the Spartans on their original mission, OPERATION RED FLAG, before the Covenant attack on Reach forced us to scrub.
The Spartans were supposed to find one of these Prophets, capture it, and use it to broker a peace treaty. Now all the Spartans are dead, lost in the hopeless defense of Reach, and with them our only hope to end this war. If a Prophet is headed to this site, we need to find it and capture it. Perhaps we can find some way to complete the Spartans' mission. With Reach lost, we don't have many options left. I know I am placing these ODSTs in danger, and that this would be a tall order even for Spartans, but we have to try. We may be mankind's only chance of survival.

Insult upon insult, brother. That is what we face.
At long last the Silent Cartographer has been found - and the Sangheili claim the prize for themselves! They claim that our imcompetence dangers the Journey, that only the worthiest are permitted to enter the Cartographer. The arrogance of this claim is laughable, since the sniveling Unggoy and Kig-Yar are permitted to enter. Most worthy, indeed.
I fear that Thaddeus' suspicions were correct. Despite the Prophets' orders that we be given a more important role in the Covenant, the Sangheili have no intention of listening. They have once again pushed us beneath themselves, Gods curse them. Is it not enough that we spend every day beneath their boots? Is it not enough that we are given inferior weapons, aging ships, weaker armor? The Covenant stands on the threshold of salvation and the Great Journey. Yet these accursed beasts continue in their petty abuse, and we Jiralhanae are forced to wait without this blessed site, guarding an empty island.

We've encountered a new class of Elites that have not been previously documented. They seem to stay in the central Facility, where this Cartographer is housed. From translated communications intercepts I believe they are called Honor Guards. I theorize that they must be guards for Prophets, or for what they consider holy sites. They wear ceremonial armor with yellow and orange highlights, and they clearly give orders even to the white-clad Elites we have observed on the island.
Their shields reflect all ballistic weaponry. The energy patterns we've observed when engaging them resemble terminal impacts on Jackal point defense gauntlets. Fortunately, they share the Jackal vulnerability to plasma fire and explosives. Luckily, we haven't seen any using active camouflage: that would hide the telltale orange armor and we'd be really screwed. It would be wonderful to understand how their shields work, or what their actual role is in Covenant society.
I can't help but feel we've discovered something special going on here. We've never seen Covenant activity like this before. Then again, we've never encountered something like Halo before. At least not to my knowledge.

Despite the overwhelmingly primitive nature of the human technology I have observed so far, I have completed my assessment of the single Reclaimer with a Class Two combat skin.
Curiously enough, he carries with him an ancilla - the only Reclaimer to do so. The ancilla is extremely persistent in searching databases, though its intrusion code is rather limited. I must make sure to avoid detection for now.
This Reclaimer is significantly larger and more powerful than its compatriots. My scans suggest it has been subjected to extensive and rather brutal biological augmentations. Its armor is effective enough. It possesses weak shielding, atmospheric filtering and strength enhancement, well suited for a potential outbreak. Perhaps the Reclaimer was planning for such a contigency? Oh, it is delightful to see it in action. It has been dealing with the interlopers far more efficiently than my own Sentinels ever could.
Interesting how, while the Reclaimer appears to answer to his unaugmented compatriots, he frequently operates independently of other units. I wonder if this unconventional strategy is due to the inefficiency of the unaugmented human soldiers. If an outbreak does occur, he could be a valuable recruit.

I have been discussing our situation with our brothers on this island. There are human forces inbound as we speak, certainly attempting to reach the Cartographer. We must keep them from it at all costs.
There is a Demon among them, the same that wrought havoc aboard the Truth and Reconciliation and freed the human commanders. I our[sic] pack may have difficulty in stopping it before it reaches the interior of the Cartographer's island, which means it must be our first and most urgent task in battle. If it comes to it, we must fight within the Cartographer's halls to protect it. I confess a certain pleasure over this. The Sangheili have forbidden the Jiralhanae to enter the Cartographer, but now necessity demands we ignore them. I would love to see their ugly faces smashed by the Demon, but if our holy Covenant is to succeed, we must halt it before it reaches those fools within. It will be a great embarrassment to those poor Sangheili when we fling the Demon's head at their feet, upon the hallowed ground forbidden to us.

We were forced to retreat after taking heavy losses inside the facility. Just our luck- as soon as we were able to make it back to the beach, we intercepted radio chatter between the Master Chief and one of our Pelicans, dropping off fresh reinforcements to help with the recapture of the Cartographer.
The Chief and his AI were able to locate a security substation, granting full access to the facility. Radio reports from Keyes and other UNSC forces seem to indicate restricted areas opening up all across the ring. I worry about what this could grant the Covenant. Whatever they have been searching for on this ring, unrestricted access could help them advance their plans. Why would the security station respond to the Chief, but not the Covenant? Cortana must have figured something out.
I've attempted to reach Captain Keyes so we can dispatch additional troops to this island, but he's been out of contact since reporting his squad was entering a previously restricted area in search of the weapons cache they're tracking. If this island indeed controls security access for the entire ring, we can't let it fall back into Covenant hands.

It won't be long before the Flood start to spread throughout this ring. In the time since activation, this Installation has gradually lapsed into disrepair in many areas. While I must claim responsibility through dereliction for some of these deficiencies, I have begun to observe many critical flaws that have been present from the beginning of Installation 04's operation. In particular, the Installation's extensive vent systems, while quite utilitarian for the movement of Sentinels throughout various facilities, are now a serious detriment to security. The Flood now have unimpeded access to these vents, which can be traversed to critical areas, including the Library. There the Flood could easily halt the progress of any Reclaimer attempting to access the Activation Index. The vents are far too large, permitting physical travel across the entire ring through highly sensitive areas. Flood biomass could easily take advantage of such a clear opportunity to spread unimpeded. Perhaps the most effective course of action would be to seal off all ventillation systems...
However, protocol is clear. In the event of a breach of containment facilities, I must move to eradicate the subjects. All Sentinel forces are now being deployed to the containment facilities. There still may be time to control this outbreak.

The human forces are nearly upon us. We expect little trouble from their forces, though the presence of a Demon worries my pack. Thanks to the meddling of the Sangheili we possess few defenses and weapons granted to the rest of the Covenant, leaving us weaker than we would like.
I am one of the few of us who possess shielded power armor, while the rest of us are left vulnerable to primitive human weapons. While their bullets are too small to inflict proper wounds, there are many of them and the humans know to concentrate their fire. It would have been better if the Sangheili had allowed more of the pack to carry heavy weapons. These old plasma rifles are far from the tool of a fearsome warrior... with more time and subtlety, perhaps we could have brought more of our own weapons to this island. As it is, we are underprepared for what should have been an easy battle. Curse the Sangheili.
